Mark Matthews

Chief Software Architect & Principal Engineer · Melbourne, Australia

Software architect and engineering leader with more than 30 years of experience designing, building and operating mission-critical business systems.

I specialise in greenfield ERP architecture: designing and delivering end-to-end enterprise platforms that have run entire businesses for over two decades. I'm equally comfortable in the executive boardroom, at the whiteboard with the architecture team, and hands-on in the codebase as a working senior engineer.

As a founding executive at Aunty Grace, I architected and remain the most prolific contributor to the cloud platform powering a 110-person home care provider serving around 2,000 clients. Before that I spent 18 years co-leading Object Craft, a boutique Melbourne consultancy, including 16 years as sole technical authority over the ERP running NLC's novated leasing business and its integration into SG Fleet after acquisition.

I build daily with AI-assisted development tools (Claude Code, JetBrains Junie, OpenAI Codex) and lead the safe introduction of LLM features into regulated operational software, owning the data sovereignty, privacy and clinical-information risk that comes with it. I do my best work as a hands-on leader of small, high-leverage teams, close to the architecture and the code.

Beyond work

I'm a semi-professional guitarist who performs regularly around Australia (music), and I take the occasional decent photograph. Earlier in life I founded, ran and eventually sold a private music school in Melbourne, in parallel with university and the early years of my engineering career. It turns out running a small business is excellent training for building software that runs them.
